The red-shanked douc langur was raised by Mr. Tran Dinh Cung's family since it was a baby. Its health was poor because it was shot by a hunting gun.

These two individuals are juvenile red-shanked douc langurs and white-cheeked gibbons being raised at home by Mr. Tran Dinh Cung's family.

Experts at the Cuc Phuong Endangered Primate Rescue Center are receiving two individuals of the brown-shanked douc langur and the white-cheeked gibbon.

Through investigation, it is known that in early August, while walking on the road, Mr. Tran Dinh Bang (Mr. Cung's son) met a local who caught a baby langur. Because he did not want this animal to be sold, Mr. Bang tried every way to buy it from a stranger he met on the road in early August.

When brought back, the baby langur was only about 3 months old. It still had many iron balls in its body, believed to have been shot by poachers when they shot the mother langur, so its health was very weak.

Mr. Bang shared: when he brought the langur home, his family intended to take it to the Cuc Phuong Primate Rescue Center to raise, but because the baby langur was too weak, he kept it to take care of it, waiting for its health to stabilize before contacting the center.

The white-cheeked gibbon was rescued by Mr. Cung from a forest ranger nearly 5 years ago.

The brown-shanked douc langur is an extremely rare animal with only a few individuals left in Vietnam.

With the support of the Environmental Police Department of Nghe An Province, on October 5, the family of teacher Tran Dinh Cung handed over the two extremely rare animals to the Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) in Cuc Phuong (Ninh Binh) for care and nurturing.

The red-shanked douc langur, scientifically known as Pygathrix nemaeus, belongs to the Cercopithecidae family. It is listed in the Vietnam Red Book, in group 1B (species of flora and fauna that are strictly prohibited from exploitation and use for commercial purposes) in Decree 32/2006/ND-CP, and is classified as endangered (EN) in the World Red Book (IUCN - 2000).

The white-cheeked gibbon, scientifically named Nomascus leucogenys, belongs to group 1B according to Decree 32/2006/ND-CP, and is classified as critically endangered (CR) in the IUCN Red Book. The Vietnam Red Book classifies the white-cheeked gibbon as endangered (EN).
