Nghe An people get rich from fishing logistics services
(Baonghean) - With over 82 km of coastline and an annual catch of over 100,000 tons, Nghe An's seafood exploitation industry has led to the strong development of other onshore industries, contributing to improving the lives of people in coastal localities.
Rich on the shore
With 319 boats and more than 2,000 workers participating in fishing at sea, Tien Thuy commune currently has 14 petrol kiosks and 28 ice production facilities serving the fishing fleet. Mr. Nam Giang - manager of Lach Quen petrol station said: The facility has 2 petrol stations at Lach Quen port, selling an average of over 35,000 liters of petrol per month to about 15 boats not only of Tien Thuy but also of Quynh Long; revenue from petrol sales is about 300 - 350 million VND/month, after deducting all expenses, the revenue is over 30 million VND.

Also in the Lach Quen area, Mr. Ho Dinh Ngoc's ice production facility must operate continuously to meet the needs of fishermen. Mr. Ngoc said that each month, the facility sells nearly 20,000 ice bars to over 30 boats, bringing in revenue of over 240 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit is nearly 50 million VND/month.
Mr. Nguyen Do Tuong in Duc Long village, Quynh Thuan commune, has only lived in Lach Quen fishing port for 4 years now, but his family has really become rich from the fishing logistics service business. His facility serves fishermen from nets, fishing gear to ice, gasoline, with an average total of about 100 million VND/trip. After deducting expenses, his family earns from 40 - 50 million VND/month.
Quynh Luu district currently has over 1,280 vessels with a total engine capacity of 250,020 CV. To supply raw materials for offshore fishing vessels, in the sea areas and estuaries, there are nearly 40 petrol trading establishments and nearly 50 ice production establishments operating regularly. Each month, the establishments will supply over 7 million liters of petrol and 25,000 tons of ice to meet the needs of the district's fishing fleet.
According to statistics, Nghe An currently has over 70,000 workers in the fisheries sector, of which over 18,000 work in the exploitation sector, about over 5,000 work in processing, over 10,000 work in fishing logistics services and shipbuilding and repair. |
Bringing Nghe An seafood to export
Currently, in 11 coastal communes of Quynh Luu district, there are more than 400 households participating in purchasing and processing seafood, with a variety of products such as fish sauce, shrimp paste, dried fish, shrimp... In addition to domestic consumption, products are exported through unofficial channels to China, some processed types such as fish fillets, frozen fish are exported to Russia and EU countries.

In hamlet 9, the only Catholic hamlet in Son Hai commune, although only 20% of households provide logistics services for fishing and processing, the remaining 80% go to sea, many households are well-off and rich in the hamlet thanks to their loyalty to these jobs for many years. Mr. Bui Van Chau's family has a traditional fish sauce making profession. With more than 100 fish sauce barrels containing 160 kg of fresh fish per barrel, each year he sells thousands of liters of delicious fish sauce to markets both inside and outside the province, bringing in a good income.

Along with Quynh Luu district, Hoang Mai town is a locality with a strongly developed fishing industry and plays a leading role in economic development. The whole town currently has 896 fishing vessels, of which 397 have a capacity of over 90CV. Mr. Hoang Ngoc Thuy - Head of the Economic Department of Hoang Mai Town People's Committee said: To contribute to the consumption and increase the value of products from the fishing industry, the aquatic and seafood processing industry has developed very strongly in Hoang Mai. In the area, there are currently 2 aquatic product processing villages Phu Loi and Phuong Can; 5 LLCs; 15 establishments for processing dried and steamed products; 35 establishments for collecting and preliminary processing; 64 cold storage warehouses with a total capacity of over 2,500 tons; over 500 establishments and households processing shrimp paste and fish sauce. The total processing output in 2016 reached over 13,500 tons.
The maritime logistics service has also developed strongly. The whole town has 12 new fishing boat building and repair workshops to meet the development requirements of new building, conversion and repair of fishing boats for fishermen in the area, of which 2 workshops have been approved by the Provincial People's Committee to have the capacity to build new fishing boats according to Decree 67; 26 ice production facilities, with a total capacity of over 25,000 tons/year; 14 petrol stations and 8 oil tankers providing about 12 million liters of oil per year for fishing boats.
The operation of the cold storage system, in addition to playing an extremely important role in purchasing and selling seafood products of fishermen in large, concentrated quantities, is also an effective economic development direction for people in coastal areas. Ms. Nguyen Thi Dao's family in Quyet Tien block, Quynh Phuong ward (Hoang Mai town) has 3 cold storages, with a total capacity of up to 170 tons of goods. After the marine environmental incident, business activities were slowed down and stagnant for a period of time, but since October 2016, the main products such as mackerel and mullet have begun to be consumed strongly again. Ms. Dao said that currently, each day her family's facility retails about 5 tons of seafood to traders in the area, nearly 10 tons wholesale to Vinh city and Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong provinces, and even to the Lao market. Prices have increased again and stabilized.

It can be seen that logistics services as well as seafood processing have developed strongly in all coastal localities such as Quynh Luu, Hoang Mai Town, Dien Chau, Nghi Loc and Cua Lo Town. The operation of the cold storage system, in addition to playing an extremely important role in purchasing and selling seafood products of fishermen in large, concentrated volumes, is also an effective economic development direction for people in coastal areas.
That proves that not only do offshore voyages bring economic value, but also the effectiveness of developing logistics services, freezing, processing and exporting...
