The first instance verdict determined that Mr. Binh had been married to Ms. Na (51 years old) since 1982. Due to frequent conflicts, they divorced two years ago. The house they shared was divided in two, Mr. Binh lived in the back and Ms. Na lived in the front. When he saw Ms. Na dating another man, he was jealous and had the intention to kill her.

In March 2015, Mr. Binh bought 3 bottles of weed killer intending to poison his ex-wife but did not do so. In the early morning of April 8, 2015, he went to where Ms. Na was setting up her breakfast stall and stabbed her many times until the knife broke. The perpetrator went into the house and took another knife and stabbed her two more times, causing the victim to collapse on the spot. Thinking Ms. Na was dead, Binh returned home and drank a bottle of weed killer in an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide.

The victim was taken to the emergency room by local people, luckily escaped death but suffered 67% disability.

In April, after being sentenced to 14 years in prison by the People's Court of Dong Nai province, Mr. Binh asked for a reduction in his sentence.

At court today, Mr. Binh did not have any new mitigating circumstances. The panel of judges determined that this sentence was already somewhat lenient, so they did not reduce the sentence.
