Man sentenced for inciting terrorism
Mr. Bui Hieu Vo posted 49 articles on Facebook with content that was considered untrue about the Party and State, inciting violence.
On May 9, Ho Chi Minh City People's Court sentenced defendant Bui Hieu Vo (56 years old) to 4 years and 6 months in prison for the crime ofPropaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The People's Procuracy accused Mr. Vo of posting a series of articles on Hieu Bui's Facebook since 2016, expressing views opposing the policies of the Party and the State; criticizing and defaming leaders and inciting terrorism. The cause stemmed from the Vung Tau government's inadequate compensation for Mr. Vo's land, combined with the Formosa incident of discharging waste into the sea, affecting the environment in many central provinces.
Mr. Vo’s posts were said to have caused public confusion. To avoid detection, Mr. Vo transferred his Facebook administration rights to Hoang Thi Kim Anh - identified as a member of the Viet Tan organization living in Australia.
Last March, Ho Chi Minh City police searched Mr. Vo’s house in Go Vap district and seized 70 documents and articles stored on Facebook and computers. Of these, 49 documents were concluded to contain content that defamed the Party and State leaders, contained false information, and incited violence...
During the investigation and trial, Mr. Vo is said to have admitted his actions, confessed honestly and asked for leniency.
