According to the indictment, at around 7 p.m. on March 7, Ms. Minh invited Mr. Moong Pho Quang (living in the same village, her ex-father-in-law, now deceased) to perform a ritual for her husband, Luong Van Hung. When Mr. Quang arrived at the house, Hung's brother-in-law gave Hung and Mr. Quang each a pink pill. Hung used half of the pill and returned the other half to his brother-in-law.
After doing the blessing for Hung, Mr. Quang left. Hung started scolding his wife for not going to visit Hung's house (in Bac Ly commune, Ky Son district).
Hung thought that Mr. Quang was doing the ritual to let ghosts possess him to harm him. Hung did not agree to invite Mr. Quang to perform the ritual, but Ms. Minh did not listen.
Hung declared that today they would both die, then took a knife and slashed his wife many times on the head, neck and arms. Ms. Minh held her head and ran away.
At this time, only Luong Thi L. (born in 2016, the child of Hung and Minh) was left in the house. Hung slashed the child's head and face many times, then slashed his own head.
Neighbors came and convinced Hung to drop the knife, took Ms. Minh to the emergency room, and organized a funeral for the child. The examination results showed that Ms. Moong Thi Minh suffered 21% health damage.
On March 8, Hung went to Ky Son district police station to surrender and confessed all his crimes.
During the investigation, the provincial police requested a forensic psychiatric examination of Luong Van Hung. The examination results showed that Hung suffered from schizophrenia (classified as F21), which limited his ability to perceive and control his behavior.
Ms. Moong Thi Minh refused to attend the trial as the victim and legal representative of L, and did not request defendant Hung to compensate for civil liability.
At the trial, Luong Van Hung admitted all his crimes. Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced the defendant Hung to 20 years in prison.
