Man in his 40s mortgaged his house because of his love for antique roses
Because he loves roses so much, Mr. Pham Van Hung took his family's "red book" to the bank to "mortgage" for money, then searched everywhere to find and buy rare old roses to grow and propagate.
That "reckless" person lives on Hop Thien street, Ninh Son ward, Ninh Binh city. The story of pawning the land use right certificate to get money to buy a few hundred rose bushes in a rural area is a story that has shocked many people. It is even more shocking when the owner of these old rose bushes is a real farmer. To "bring" more than 400 old rose bushes to his garden, Mr. Hung had to mortgage all his assets and try all sorts of ways...
Although he had never played with roses or had any knowledge about roses, Mr. Hung borrowed hundreds of millions of dong to buy hundreds of old rose trees from all over to plant in his garden.
Before growing old roses, Mr. Hung used to grow many types of plants and raise many types of animals, but he often encountered the situation of good harvests but low prices, which made him extremely discouraged. “The biggest failure was when I brought the model of raising meat crickets. All the money and effort I put into crickets ended up empty-handed. Despite such failures, I have never been discouraged. I will probably never give up farming until I die...”, Mr. Hung confided.
Disappointed with the previous models of raising and growing, Mr. Hung struggled to find new models to refer to and then apply. Just once by chance saw the model of growing old roses on TV, but made Mr. Hung extremely passionate, the more he learned about roses, the more he loved this flower.
Most of the old rose trees bought by Mr. Hung are quite old. The oldest tree is 60 years old and was bought for nearly 20 million VND. The remaining trees are more than ten years old and less than 10 years old and cost from 5 to 10 million VND. The youngest tree must be over 2 million VND.
Mr. Hung said that in the past, in his hometown, almost every house had at least one old rose bush. People at that time only thought about growing them for beauty, and no one cared about their monetary value like they do now. But when the city became urbanized, the old roses disappeared, and now no one has a single plant left.
According to Mr. Hung, if you spend tens of millions to buy peach or kumquat trees to play with on Tet holiday, it will only last for a month at most. But with the same amount of money, if you buy a pot of old roses to play with, it will last all year round. The flowers are beautiful and very fragrant, so when entering the house, it will be much more luxurious.

From that thought, after many sleepless nights, Mr. Hung decided to collect old roses to plant in his garden, first for fun, then to consider business. To have enough money as capital, he planned to take his red book to the bank to mortgage for a loan of more than 200 million VND. After discussing that idea with his wife, unexpectedly, his idea was absolutely supported by his wife.
In the early days of starting his business, from the money borrowed from the bank and more than 400 million VND from his family, and borrowed from relatives and friends, Mr. Hung collected all the money to buy roses. "After having money, I wandered everywhere in the district and outside the province, regardless of distance, whenever I heard of a house with an old rose tree, I would go there and ask to buy it," Mr. Hung shared.
Mr. Hung said that he currently owns more than 400 old rose trees on an area of more than 2,000 square meters of garden with about 10 different varieties of old roses. To own these rose trees, Mr. Hung had to spend nearly 600 million VND and countless efforts to collect them. "There were days when I drove hundreds of kilometers, all the way to Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh... if I was lucky, I could buy a few trees, sometimes I had to travel a lot but couldn't buy any trees" Mr. Hung recalled.
Talking more about his old rose garden, Mr. Hung said that his garden is currently being visited by many people and asked to buy. Some old rose trees are being offered up to 70 million VND. Although he has made a profit of hundreds of millions of VND after nearly 2 years of care, he has not decided to sell. He plans to plant and propagate a lot, only then will he think about doing business with old roses...
Mr. Hung's 2,000 square meter garden is full of old roses. In the future, he will expand his garden to grow only old roses.
Sharing about the technique of growing old roses, Mr. Hung said that in his family's garden, most of the roses are native, so the plants are very healthy and rarely get sick, so old roses are very easy to grow and care for. Just watering daily and fertilizing periodically will help the plants grow well. "This flower is beautiful and has a charming fragrance, blooming all year round, very attractive," Mr. Hung expressed.
