People collect signatures on a petition to the United Nations Secretary-General to protest US sanctions.

A large number of Venezuelans gathered at Blivar Plaza on August 11 to sign a petition to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to protest US sanctions.

The month-long campaign is expected to gather 13 million signatures in Venezuela. Participants have called the US sanctions a “blockade” against the Venezuelan people.

"We started collecting signatures from people to protest the aggressive measures of the US government. We hope to succeed, because all Venezuelans have suffered from this economic blockade," said a Venezuelan citizen.

Previously, in a speech on August 10 in the capital Caraas, President Nicolas Maduro strongly condemned the latest US sanctions and signed a petition.

On August 5, the US government announced the freezing of all Venezuelan government assets in the US, increasing its economic and diplomatic pressure campaign against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan government has strongly criticized this move, saying it is an act of “economic terrorism” aimed at promoting unconstitutional changes in the South American country, violating the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter./.
