"I think Mr. Trump did it, as he has done with others, to prevent any criticism of him, or of his administration... It was his way of trying to get back at me," Brennan said in an interview with MSNBC.
"President Trump would be making a big mistake if he thought that by banning me from updating classified information, he would be able to silence me," he added.
Mr Brennan also said Trump's decision was "politically motivated" and aimed at suppressing free speech.
Earlier on Wednesday, presidential spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that Trump had stripped Brennan of access to classified material.
Brennan, who served as CIA director under President Barack Obama, accused Trump of treason after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July.
