Nursing homes for the rich in Japan offer a full range of amenities and services no different from a 5-star hotel, from dining, entertainment to beauty.

In a private nursing home called Orix (in Urayasu, a suburb of Tokyo, Japan), 86-year-old Teruko Watanabe is lying on a leather sofa, enjoying beauty treatments just a few minutes' walk from her room.

Living in this high-class nursing home, Ms. Teruko not only receives health care, food, and living services like other nursing homes, but also receives beauty care and enjoys elegant pleasures such as watching art performances and practicing calligraphy.

Ms. Teruko said that going to a beauty salon is not just about beautifying herself, but it is also a form of therapy that helps slow down the process of memory loss, keeps the brain active and prevents depression.

“I come here for makeup therapy. I try different makeup looks. It makes me feel happy and younger,” said Teruko.

Mỗi phòng ở Orix được trang hoàng theo ý thích của các cụ, tạo cảm giác thân thuộc như sống ở nhà.

Each room at Orix is decorated to the elders' liking, creating a homely feeling.

Like Mrs. Teruko, Mrs. Miyuki Hara has lived in Orix for 5 years. Mrs. Miyuki is married, but because they are both old and cannot take care of each other, her husband decided to send her to a nursing home. He still visits her in Orix 3 times a week.

“I feel like I did the best I could for my wife. I see that everyone living here is happy, the nurses always have a smile on their faces. I am glad that my wife is being well taken care of by the experts, she looks healthy and happy,” said Mr. Kazuo Hara, Mrs. Miyukia’s husband.

Orix Nursing Home has 68 single rooms and 8 double rooms. Each single room is decorated according to the preferences of each person, creating a sense of familiarity for the residents.

Orix has a beauty salon, private dining room, and rooms reserved for art and music performances.

High-end private nursing homes for the wealthy like Orix are now popular in Japan because of increasing demand due to the aging population.

The cost of living in a high-end private nursing home like Orix is not cheap, at around 430,000 yen/month (about 86 million VND). Even in more high-end nursing homes, the cost can be up to 150-200 million VND/month.

Specifically, at the Maihama Club luxury nursing home, the monthly cost of living here is 9,500 USD (about 216 million VND).

For the money spent, those living in Maihama Club enjoy services that are no different from those in high-class hotels. Rooms at Maihama Club are decorated like European mansions.

Meals at Maihama Club are provided by Michelin-starred restaurants (world culinary rating system).

Each single room at Maihama Club has a large window, a private bathroom with automatic heating. Maihama currently has 73 residents, with a staff of 60. Each resident is given an electronic device to call a nurse at any time.

“Other nursing homes usually give the elderly a schedule to follow, but here the elderly have full freedom to decide,” said a Maihama Club employee.
