The successor of the US Ambassador to the UN is just Trump's 'megaphone'
(Baonghean.vn) - In the context that US President Donald Trump is still considering potential candidates to replace Nikki Haley - US Ambassador to the UN, analysts say that her successor will likely be Mr. Trump's "propaganda mouthpiece" in the international arena, with little influence in the US foreign policy planning process.

Many believe that Ms. Haley has fulfilled her mission as the US envoy to the UN. According to the BuzzFeed website, Ms. Haley “has succeeded in representing the US at a multilateral organization, representing an administration that has always criticized multilateralism.”
“She is a strong, articulate person and a strong supporter of the Trump administration’s foreign policy,” said Heritage Foundation expert Brett Schaefer.
While there is much skepticism about why the 46-year-old former South Carolina governor would announce her resignation now, less than a month before the midterm congressional elections, people are now paying attention to the candidates to succeed Ms. Haley.
“President Trump is likely to choose a pragmatist to replace Haley, because that is his overarching view on foreign policy,” said Darrell West, an expert at the Brookings Institution. “He wants someone to defend his policies, regardless of what that individual thinks.”
President Trump is currently considering Dina Powell, a managing director at Goldman Sachs and former deputy national security adviser, as the US ambassador to the UN to replace Haley. Powell served in the George W. Bush administration.
However, some hard-line conservatives have expressed concerns about Ms. Powell's "look at the state of the world before making national policy" stance, which is inconsistent with Mr. Trump's "America First" policy.
Mr. Ford O'Connell, a Republican congressman and news critic, commented that the person replacing Ms. Haley would be someone who is ready to be "Mr. Trump's mouthpiece."
Analysts also said: "Ms. Haley has been overshadowed in recent months by Secretary of State Pompeo. He has taken the lead on many issues, and is clearly the person trusted to implement the Trump administration's foreign policy. Ms. Haley's successor is likely to speak softly and carry a small stick"./.
