Many Americans believe that Donald Trump's election as US president on November 9 was "terrible" and a "disaster" second only to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Immediately after the US presidential election results were announced, Twitter was flooded with disappointed and sad statuses from Hillary Clinton supporters, according to CBS News.

They noticed a coincidence between the numbers of 9/11 and 9/11/2001, when the United States was terrorized by al-Qaeda elements, killing nearly 3,000 people.

"9/11 and 9/11, the most disastrous days in American history," one person wrote.

According to some, this metaphor is the only way to fully describe their feelings about the "catastrophic nature" of what just happened in the race for the White House.

"9/11 the war began. 9/11 the war ended. The terrorists won. Our country now seems to belong to them," one person expressed pessimism.

"Will never forget 9/11. Will always regret 9/11," another user wrote.

One person said that 9/11 was the worst day in American history and 9/11 the second worst day after that.

Some people even likened the election to a financial terrorism when "the businessman president broke the global economy".

However, some people think that the two incidents should not be compared: "Stop comparing the tragedy of this election to the tragedy of 9/11. Both are tragedies, but the comparison is disrespectful."

The event of Donald Trump winning the US presidency with an overwhelming majority of votes over Mrs. Clinton also led to a series of protests in many cities. Thousands of people marched in New York, Boston, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Seattle... with anti-Trump banners and burned the American flag.

Outside Trump Tower in New York, documentary producer Michael Moore said they will not back down in their fight against the newly elected president.

"We used to have big protests before the Iraq war but when the war started, everyone stopped. This time, we're not going to stop until he's out of there," said Moore.
