Stephanie Murphy, whose Vietnamese name is Dang Thi Ngoc Dung, completed her university program "through scholarships, hard work and determination."
After the September 11 terrorist attacks, she worked for the Department of Defense, serving as a special security specialist for four years.
Ms. Murphy was also one of the invited speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in July.
