Stone fences and orchid baskets create a unique space in the village.

The stilt house of Mr. Luong Van Huy in Trung Dinh village (Chi Khe - Con Cuong) looks normal like other houses in this Thai community. The house was built in the 70s and has a low base, but the owner is clever in arranging the garden space. This creates a different look from other houses in the community. It is a space of wild orchid baskets, stone pots and stone fences.

It took Mr. Luong Van Huy more than half a year to complete the stone fence.

In the garden of more than 1000 m2, in addition to native vegetables, the homeowner cleverly displayed baskets of orchids and ornamental plants along the entrance. Each basket is of a different species collected by the homeowner from the province and northern localities. To learn how to care for orchids, he went online to find orchid varieties that are suitable for the local climate and not too difficult to care for. His job as a civil servant with only two days off on weekends did not give him much time to care for ornamental plants.

The stone fence was inspired by the ancient Thai villages in Son La.

The flower pots are collected entirely from native plants. To reduce the cost of buying pots, he used stream stones and mortar to create flower pots that are both sturdy and have a natural mountain forest look. One pot is attached to a white stone block collected by the owner from Viet Tri (Phu Tho). This type of stone is not common in the mountainous region of Nghe An and is considered by the owner as a souvenir of his years working in the northern provinces.

Mr. Huy's work also received support from friends who share the same passion.

The fence around the house is built with stream stones, which also looks different from the brick and mortar fences in the village. Mr. Huy shared: "I find that building a fence with bricks is not only less aesthetic but also less durable than building with stones." However, if you pay for workers, it will be very expensive because the progress is slower than building with bricks. The homeowner spent more than half a year to complete the stone fence surrounding the house. He said that the "project" took a long time because he only had 2 days a week to build the fence.

The flower pot is also made of stone, looking simple and unique.

As an official of a district prosecutor's office in the highlands, he can only pursue his passion for a stone space in the middle of this mountainous area on his days off. Having worked at many enterprises in the northern mountainous provinces, which are long-standing residences of the Thai people, the stone fences in the Thai villages of Son La and Yen Bai inspired him to realize his idea.

The space is dotted with stone fences and flower pots, helping the stilt house retain the pristine beauty of the mountains and forests.

“Many mountain villages are developing tourism based on traditional community culture. A Thai village has an ancient stilt house and a fence made of stream stones, which I think will be very impressive to tourists.” Huy shared and said that he would mobilize the community to build a stone fence. According to the inspector, building a stone fence is not only beautiful and close to nature, but also saves money on buying bricks because stream stones are readily available. Building a stone fence is quite simple, even amateur masons can do it themselves. However, this also requires perseverance from each person.
