Prisoner of the Century Huynh Van Nen sent a complaint to the People's Police Newspaper
On the morning of March 17, Lawyer Pham Cong Ut said that Mr. Huynh Van Nen (who was wrongly convicted of two murders) had sent a petition to the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam Journalists Association to complain about the articles accusing Mr. Huynh Van Nen.
The petition reads: “After being released from prison, I learned that the People's Police Newspaper published the articles “Was Huynh Van Nen wrongly arrested?” in the issue dated November 3, 2000 and issues 93 and 94 published on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 and Thursday, August 5, 2004, convicting me before the second trial of the Vuon Dieu case was brought to trial on August 6, 2004. In it, they also took my own photo to post my personal image in prison and my mother-in-law while the matter had not yet been clarified, which was completely wrong in both sentiment and nature, convicting me before the court brought me to trial.”
According to Mr. Nen, in the above articles it was written: "...With his inherently cunning and hooligan nature, Huynh Van Nen tried to deny his crime by crudely smearing a number of investigators who directly participated in investigating him in the two cases mentioned above."

The petition also listed the damage caused by the article: “Emotionally, after reading the above articles, for me, it was a painful re-traumatization, recalling memories that I and my family of three generations had to endure….”
According to Mr. Nen, at the time these articles were published, the people who suffered the most severe effects were his extended family, who lived outside the prison bars but were also discriminated against by public opinion and neighbors.
“At that time, my wife not only had to be away from her husband, but also had to take on the role of breadwinner in the family, shouldering the responsibility of a father to raise children, and the duty of a child to both her parents… During the most difficult time of her life, my wife also had to endure the sarcasm and contempt of the whole society for being the wife of a serious criminal,” Mr. Nen wrote in the petition.
Mr. Huynh Van Nen requested that the author of these articles and the Editor-in-Chief who approved this article appear, officially correct, publicly apologize and compensate for mental damage to him and his family.
The legal basis that the petition states is based on Article 9 of the Press Law, amended and supplemented in 1999, and Clause 3, Article 4 of Decree 51/2002/ND-CP of the Government dated April 26, 2002, detailing the implementation of the Press Law...
In the petition, Mr. Nen also stated that if within the time limit the People's Police newspaper does not respond, Mr. Nen will file a lawsuit in court for a public trial.
