Vietnam ranks 75th with a happiness index of 5,360.

According to the BBC, this ranking was published yesterday by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). SDSN includes people working in academia, government, and the private sector.

This is the third time the United Nations has published this report. The survey was conducted from 2012 to 2014 in 158 countries. In the second report in 2013, Vietnam ranked 63rd out of 156.

Switzerland rose from third place in 2013 to first, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway, and Canada. At the bottom of the list are Togo, Burundi, Benin, Rwanda, and Syria, a country ravaged by civil war.

To compile the above ranking, researchers evaluated based on criteria such as real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, average life expectancy, corruption index, and social freedom.

"More and more national and local governments are using research and happiness index data to formulate policies that improve people's lives," the report states.

"A rising happiness index is considered a measure of social progress and the success of public policy."
