Risk of breast cancer from chemicals in shampoo

According to US research on the link between parabens and breast cancer, chemicals found in cosmetics may be much more dangerous than previously known.

Some recent studies in the US show that even small amounts of parabens found in shampoos and cosmetics can cause breast cancer. Parabens is the general name for a group of chemical preservatives most widely used in cosmetics. The most common forms of parabens used in cosmetics are methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.

Usually, people will combine parabens to help reduce the dosage of this substance in the product while increasing the antibacterial and antifungal ability. This type of chemical is widely used in the production of cosmetics such as shampoos, hair care products, sunscreens, moisturizers, skin softeners, shaving water, etc.

Researchers believe that exposure to this chemical, especially during puberty and pregnancy, can have serious health effects. Parabens have the ability to stimulate the production of the female hormone oestrogen as well as the ability to mimic the natural hormone oestradiol. Both oestradiol and oestrogen have been linked to breast cancer and fertility problems.

"Although parabens are known to mimic the growth effects of estrogen on breast cancer cells, some researchers believe that their effects are too weak to be harmful," said study leader Dale Leitman, MD, a gynecologist and molecular biologist at the University of California, Berkeley. "However, this may not be true when parabens are combined with other agents that affect cell growth."

Catherine Priestley, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Breast Cancer Care Centre, added: "This is just an initial study, and further research is needed to fully understand the link between parabens and breast cancer. It is important that every woman remembers that they should change to a healthier lifestyle to reduce the risk of dangerous diseases.
