Risk of kidney failure due to eating too much red meat
A new study has warned that eating red meat is strongly linked to the risk of developing kidney disease. And replacing red meat with other protein sources in the diet can significantly reduce the risk of the disease. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).

The link between kidney failure and a diet high in red meat
Currently, the sharp increase in the number of cases of chronic kidney disease and the risk of progression to end-stage renal failure (a disease that can only be cured by dialysis or kidney transplantation) is a concern for many people.
To examine the relationship between diet (specifically protein sources) and kidney function, a research team led by Dr Woon Puay Koh, Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, followed 63,257 people in Singapore for 15.5 years.
The results showed that the risk of end-stage renal failure depends on the amount of red meat consumed by each person. If you eat too much red meat (over 25% of the recommended amount), the risk of kidney failure is 40% higher than those who eat less red meat (less than 25% of the recommended amount). In addition, no association was found between other sources of protein such as poultry, fish, shrimp, crab, eggs, dairy products, soy and beans. Notably, replacing red meat with these protein sources will reduce the risk of kidney failure by up to 62%.
"We have done this research to be able to give useful advice to everyone as well as patients with kidney failure. This finding also shows that people with chronic kidney disease and kidney-related disorders can still maintain a protein-rich diet, but should prioritize using protein from plants. This will help control kidney disease well and prevent the risk of progression to kidney failure," said Dr. Koh.
Prevent kidney failure: Limit red meat intake
According to research results by scientists in Singapore, a diet high in red meat increases the risk of kidney disease and can lead to kidney failure. Therefore, instead of eating protein-rich red meat, patients should choose protein sources from plants such as beans, soybeans, margarine, or replace them with other types of meat such as poultry, fish, shrimp, crab, etc.

It can be seen that cutting down on red meat protein in the diet helps slow the progression of kidney disease.
