Risk of retaking the test if violating alcohol concentration when the driver's license is about to expire
If you commit a violation that results in a long license revocation period, such as alcohol concentration,... when your license is about to expire, you will likely have to retake the test when applying for a new driver's license.

According to Mr. Duong Viet Tri - Head of the Department of Transport, Vehicle and Driver Management, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has an average of 30 cases per month that have to retake the driving license test due to the expiration of the renewal period as prescribed.
Accordingly, if at the time of applying for a new driver's license, the license is still valid or has expired for less than 3 months, then there is no need to retake the test when applying for a new driver's license.
If the license expires more than 3 months but less than 1 year, the theory test must be retaken; if it expires more than 1 year, both the theory and practice tests must be retaken when applying for a new driver's license.
At the same time, if the remaining period of the driving license is less than the period of revocation due to the violation, the violator will still have his driving license revoked for the full period as prescribed. During this period, even though the driving license has expired, the violator is still not allowed to apply for a replacement.
Thus, depending on the time the driver's license is revoked, leading to an overdue renewal, the violator must retake the theory test, or both theory and practice, when submitting the application for renewal.
Therefore, drivers should be careful to avoid violations that result in long-term license revocation, such as alcohol violations.
According to Mr. Tri, although there is no regulation forcing retakers to retake the course, in reality most of them have to retake the course to grasp the newly updated points.
Specifically, in addition to the number of questions that have been increased compared to before, some new types have also been added, such as adding simulation tests to the theory. If not re-studying, it will be difficult for re-takers to grasp the newly updated points to pass these completely new tests.
