Workers use banana leaves to wrap small sausages. |
At around 8:00 a.m. on April 22, a working group of the Environmental Crime Prevention Police Department, Binh Thuan Provincial Police, suddenly inspected the pork roll processing facility of Mr. Tran Quang Hai (62 years old) at Group 1, Quarter 8, Phuoc Hoi Ward, La Gi Town, Binh Thuan and discovered that workers mixed Borax (a substance that can cause stomach and liver cancer...) into the raw materials to process pork roll.
At the scene, authorities seized 5 kg of Borax that Mr. Hai was hiding at home and 13.5 kg of finished pork sausage that had been mixed with Borax before.
Mr. Hai confessed that to process the sausage, his facility buys cheap, spoiled meat as raw material. For every 1 kg of lean meat and 0.5 kg of fat, he mixes it with one and a half spoons of Borax, then grinds it into a mold, molds it into a half-kilogram sausage, or wraps it in banana leaves to form small sausages.
The purpose of mixing Borax into the ingredients is to help the finished pork rolls have a chewy, crispy, delicious taste, and long shelf life. All the pork rolls mixed with chemicals are sold by Mr. Hai's facility at markets, shops, Dinh Thay Thim tourist area and kindergartens in La Gi town.

Some ingredients used to make ham. |
At the same time, another working group of the Environmental Crime Prevention Police Department, Binh Thuan Provincial Police suddenly inspected the ham processing facility of Mr. Nguyen Yen (49 years old) in Quarter 10, Phuoc Hoi Ward, La Gi Town and seized 250 grams of Borax and 10 kilograms of finished ham mixed with this toxic chemical.
Mr. Yen admitted that he knew Borax was a toxic chemical, but because it helps keep the ham fresh, chewy, crispy, and delicious, he still secretly mixed it into the ingredients and processed it. Products from Mr. Yen's facility were sold to markets and restaurants in the area and Phan Thiet City.
"This is the first time a large quantity of toxic Borax has been discovered used in food processing in Binh Thuan. Authorities are continuing to investigate and expand the case," said Lieutenant Colonel Truong Si Trung, commander of the working group.
These two facilities were once propagandized and reminded not to use toxic chemicals in processing, but because of greed, the facility owners still deliberately added Borax to the raw materials, processed them, and then sold them on the market.
