(Baonghean.vn) - The two FIFA referees invited to officiate the Hanoi - HAGL match at the National Cup refused to do their duty for a reason, not because they avoided the task as public opinion speculated.

The match between Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Hanoi in the first leg of the National Cup quarter-finals at Pleiku Stadium was "hot" in terms of refereeing, both on the field and in the stands, making the second leg the focus of public opinion.

Accordingly, the referee in charge of the match at Hang Day Stadium is predicted to face a lot of pressure, requiring courage and experience in officiating. However, two invited FIFA referees refused. In the end, the referee chosen was Mr. Nguyen Hien Triet along with some of his familiar associates.

Commenting on this, former Golden Whistle Duong Manh Hung assessed: "In the past, referees refused their duties very rarely. However, there were still cases like some matches in Hai Phong or Thanh Hoa, some extremist fans often blocked the referee's way to return or assaulted them, making them fear for their own safety."

"I strongly oppose this because referees should be proud when assigned. If they are passionate, why should they be afraid? If a referee refuses a task, he should quit his job. That is cowardly. If he lacks courage, he should quit. People also say that referees are afraid of Mr. Duc, and that is also wrong. Mr. Duc works for the common good, wants everything to improve, so what is there to be afraid of?"

However, the root of the problem lies in the fact that the two invited FIFA referees are both from Hanoi. To avoid any negative publicity, not only these two referees but also the referee supervisor is someone from another locality.

Referee Nguyen Hien Triet, who agreed to officiate this match, is from Ho Chi Minh City, while his assistant, referee Tran Duy Khanh, is from Nghe An.

On his personal page, a former Deputy Head of the VFF Referee Board said that we should calmly look at where this match stands in the national tournament system. The difficulty of the match is either “life or death” or inherently irreconcilable. This is a normal match, there is no need to make a big deal out of it.

In V.League, each main referee who controls a match receives a salary of 8 million VND from VPF. Assistant referees including linesmen, table referees and referee supervisors receive a salary of 5 million VND.
