Researchers at Brook University in New York (USA) analyzed genetic factors in many cancer samples to find answers to the link between environmental factors and cancer risk.
From this, scientists found that a poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress and polluted living environment are the main causes of cancers such as lung, breast and prostate.
In an article published in the British scientific journal Nature, scientists estimate that up to 90% of the most common cancers are caused by external factors rather than cell errors in the body.
Among those external factors are pollution, ultraviolet radiation and stress, followed by factors that people can control such as diet and exercise.
Research shows that a healthier lifestyle plays an important role in reducing the risk of cancer.
Quitting smoking, exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet can all be considered active preventive measures in the fight against cancer.
Cancer is caused by damage to DNA, which creates mutations in essential genes that control cell division and other important mechanisms.
One or more mutations accumulate and cause uncontrolled proliferation and tumor formation.
A previously published study by Cancer Research UK suggests that 40% of cancers can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle./.
