Golden rules when driving in the rain

Keeping both hands on the steering wheel, turning on the headlights, driving slowly or keeping a distance of 25m from the vehicle in front are safety tips when driving in the rain.

1. Keep both hands on the steering wheel throughout the journey.

When driving in the rain, especially heavy rain, don't be distracted by your phone or entertainment system. Turn them off. Look 360 degrees, focus on the front, and glance in the rearview and exterior mirrors to easily see what's happening around you, like mud ahead, fallen trees or poles, downed power lines, or starting to enter a dangerous area.

2. Turn on the headlights

In some countries, it is mandatory to turn on your headlights when driving in the rain, even during the day. Turning on your headlights will help you see ahead, and oncoming traffic will be able to see you more easily, helping to prevent accidents.

3. Keep a minimum distance of 25 m from the vehicle in front.

Keep at least 25 metres of distance from the car in front of you. You never know how the driver in front of you will be doing in the rain. If you are worried about getting too close or too far from the car in front, you can use the 2-second rule at speeds below 20 km/h.

4. Drive at slow speed

Drive at a speed lower than the permitted speed, enough to help you observe and feel comfortable in controlling situations, with enough distance and visibility ahead for you to be able to make accurate decisions with the accelerator, brake pedal or steering wheel.

5. Ensure tire grip

Be sure to check the condition of your tires when driving in the rain. Radial tires generally have good traction, but worn tires will reduce the vehicle's ability to control traction on wet, slippery road surfaces.

6. Recognize and avoid puddles

When driving through puddles, the tire is less likely to make contact with the road surface than usual. Traction is significantly reduced. To avoid losing control when driving through large puddles, keep the throttle steady and straighten the steering wheel to the observed position. Do not turn the steering wheel suddenly, and always calmly handle the situation when driving through puddles.
