Prof. Dr. Mai Hong Quy, Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, said that unlike previous conferences on the East Sea which had a wide scope, discussing many issues about history, geopolitical position of the East Sea, security, maritime and aviation safety, economic and trade cooperation between countries in the region and the world, this conference only focused on the legal field, specifically analyzing, evaluating, and analyzing the event of China placing the Haiyang 981 drilling rig in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf from the perspective of international law.
The workshop will also review and discuss peaceful measures to resolve disputes in international law, including political, diplomatic and legal measures.
Scholars from countries that have used legal measures to resolve disputes such as Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, etc. will present their experiences in resolving disputes before international tribunals (international courts and arbitrations). In particular, experts who have participated in resolving international disputes as judges and lawyers such as Professor of International Law Alexander Yankor, former judge of the International Court of Justice, former judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea from Bulgaria; Professor Makane Moise Mbengue, Faculty of Law, University of Geneva, Switzerland, will help Vietnam gain more information and experience to peacefully resolve this case.
