Nguyen Thi Oanh won overwhelmingly in the 5,000m distance at the National Athletics Championship.
Runner Nguyen Thi Oanh won the 5,000m race after 16 minutes 35 seconds 89, leaving many opponents behind by more than two laps at the National Athletics Championship on the morning of October 25.
Nguyen Thi Oanh competed in the 5,000m event with 13 other athletes. After the starting signal, she "hid from the wind" behind her 9-year-old junior Le Thi Tuyet.
It was not until the final lap that the runner from Bac Giang accelerated strongly, finishing alone, even leaving many competitors behind by more than two laps. However, this achievement was still lower than the record she set in 2021 (15 minutes 53 seconds 48).
Pham Thi Hong Le (Binh Dinh) came in second with a time of 16 minutes 39 seconds 15, while the Bronze Medal went to Le Thi Tuyet (Phu Yen) after 16 minutes 43 seconds 90.
This is Nguyen Thi Oanh's second Gold Medal at the 2023 National Athletics Championship. Yesterday, she also easily won the 1,500m distance with a time of 4 minutes 21 seconds 07.
This year, Nguyen Thi Oanh registered to compete in four events. She also competed in the 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000m and is expected to continue to have no opponents like the two distances she competed in.
Nguyen Thi Oanh, born in 1995, is considered the "Golden Girl" of Vietnamese athletics. This runner owns 12 SEA Games Gold Medals after four participations in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023, a Silver Medal at the 2016 Asian Beach Games and a Silver Medal at the 2018 ASIAD.
