Journalist Huu Nghia - Head of the News Department of Nghe An Newspaper was extremely moved and surprised when he learned that his work "Gap lai ben nhan" was awarded the B prize (there was no A prize) of the 7th National Press Award. This award was honorably presented on the occasion of the 88th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. This is not only a joy and honor for journalist Huu Nghia but also a pride and affirmation for Nghe An Newspaper and the activities of the provincial press. We had time to record the journalist's thoughts before he left for Hanoi to receive the award.
On the occasion of the days when the whole country turned to the program “Truong Bon, legend and gratitude” to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the historical event of Truong Bon, many major activities took place at this place. At that time, Nghe An Newspaper was launching the first “Golden Moment” art-journalism photo contest. At that time, I had some photos on the theme of the sea to participate in the contest, but I felt it was not enough. It seemed that, according to the intuition of a writer and a cameraman, I still felt that something was missing. As if the breath of life had not appeared in my work.
On this occasion, the Editorial Board assigned me, NSNA Sy Minh, and reporter Thanh Le to work at the historical site of Truong Bon. Always conscious of recording these historical events through the lens, I proactively searched for topics and themes to shoot. After taking some photos, I decided to invite Mrs. Tran Thi Thong, who was at the field hall at that time, the only survivor of the bombing 44 years ago, to burn incense at the graves of the female Youth Volunteers, her former comrades, to record this emotional image. At that time, many other photographers also "rushed" to follow. However, it seemed that the tears had dried up in the eyes of the former squad leader. The idea of finding a surge of emotions in this situation became difficult to implement. Suddenly, when Mrs. Thong finished burning incense and turned to leave, a man suddenly rushed out, hugged Mrs. Tran Thi Thong and choked up with tears. Almost without thinking, I reflexively turned the camera around and clicked continuously, not missing a single moment of this precious moment. At that time, I also did not know who the man was.
That night, when I came back to review the photos, I realized that this series of photos was very soulful. NSNA Sy Minh also had very good comments about the photo. The next day, along with the news and quick notes, the photo "Reuniting with the benefactor" was solemnly published on the front page of Nghe An Newspaper, considered a highlight of the 44th anniversary of Truong Bon history. At this point, I knew exactly that the male character in the photo was Mr. Le Tien Vinh, a former Youth Volunteer of Company 307, who was also the person who dug, found and brought Ms. Tran Thi Thong (Squad Leader of Squad 2, Company 317) out of the buried pile and became the only survivor out of 14 people after the fierce bombing in the early morning of October 31, 1968. The photo capturing the event of two comrades, also former benefactors, meeting again after exactly 44 years was taken at 8:00 a.m. on October 27, 2012, the 44th anniversary of the Truong Bon victory. With a strong, sturdy composition, the light from behind highlights the theme of the choking emotions of two comrades meeting again. The military uniform, the silver hair pressed together in choking emotions... all come together to create the historical value, the precious "golden moment" of this work. Thanks to that, this work received First Prize in the "Golden Moment" photo contest organized by Nghe An Newspaper for the first time in 2012. Even more special, "Meeting the benefactor" was respectfully awarded the B prize (there was no A prize) by the jury of the 7th National Press Awards.
Commenting on this work, comrade Nguyen The Ky - Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department said that this is a valuable work about the moment, with high political significance. The photo is full of information in the context of the reunion after 44 years, this is a typical example of specific heroes. The National Award Jury briefly assessed "It is a work of true value".
As a journalist, I am also passionate about photography. I hold the camera with the mindset of someone who wants to record the last moments of life. On every step, in every page of my upcoming writing, each photo taken is also a message to record life and also to dedicate to today's life.
