North Korean leader Kim Jong-un believes that his first visit to Russia in four years demonstrates the importance of strategic relations between Russia and North Korea, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on September 13. Kim made the statement upon his arrival at Khasan station in the Primorye region in Russia's Far East, where he was greeted by Russian officials, including Russian Minister of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov, Russia's TASS news agency reported on September 13.

Mr. Kim emphasized that his visit clearly demonstrated the serious attitude of the North Korean party and government.

According to KCNA, the purpose of the North Korean leader's visit to Russia is to "take friendly relations to a new level." He thanked the Russian side for the warm welcome and conveyed his best wishes to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the armed forces and the people of Russia. After the welcome ceremony, Mr. Kim departed for his next destination, but the specific location was not disclosed.

According to KCNA, Mr. Kim Jong-un left for Russia on the afternoon of September 10, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the meeting between Mr. Putin and Mr. Kim is scheduled to take place in the next few days.
