"Screenwriter Xiao Liu," a Weibo user, said he was awakened at 8:30 a.m. by an earthquake that caused objects in his house to fall and glass doors to shatter.according toSCMP. Xiao Liu said he was very scared and quickly ran out of his home in Yanbian, Korean Autonomous Region, Jilin Province, China.

Another Weibo user living in Changbai County, Yanbian, said that when she felt the earthquake clearly this morning, the first thing she thought of was North Korea's nuclear test.

"This place is not on an earthquake belt, nor is it an oil field, so if the ground is shaking so much, it must be because Kim Jong-un is testing nuclear weapons," she wrote.

North Korea announced today that it had successfully tested a nuclear warhead, on the 68th anniversary of its founding on September 9 and marking Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test. The previous four tests took place in 2006, 2009, 2013 and earlier this year.

The US Geological Survey said a 5.3 magnitude tremor occurred at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Korea. The US sent planes to collect air samples to check for radioactive dust near the test site.

North Korean state media said no radioactive dust was released into the air and the test had no adverse impact on the environment.

Chinese data shows no radioactive fallout in the two provinces bordering North Korea, Jilin and Liaoning.

However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry today condemned North Korea's nuclear test and called on the country to stop actions that worsen the situation. China also pledged to continue efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula through the six-party talks, including China, the United States, Russia, Japan and the two Koreas.

North Korea is under harsh sanctions from the United Nations over its previous nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
