Laser-scanned 3D images from 2015 have just been revealed, offering the chance to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral after a major fire just days ago as it was before the fire broke out.

Thanks to the meticulous work of historian Andrew Tallon from Vassar College, every exquisite detail of this 13th-century structure has been recorded in a digital archive.

One of the 3D scanned images of Notre Dame Cathedral.

This 3D data is revolutionizing our understanding of how the building was constructed. It could also provide a blueprint for how Paris might rebuild Notre Dame.

According to Wired, architects now hope that Tallon's scans can provide a detailed map to prepare for what construction will need to be done.

For centuries, the only tools we used to measure medieval buildings and structures were string and rulers, pencils, but by turning to 21st century technology, Tallon has been able to shed more light on ancient architectural features.

Earlier, a major fire broke out at the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, causing severe damage to the nearly 1,000-year-old heritage. The serious fire shocked France and the world.

Andre Fino, a spokesman for the cathedral, said valuable relics in the cathedral appeared to be largely unaffected. Meanwhile, observers said that the restoration work after the fire could take decades at least.
