"The Turkish charges are regrettable, they were the wrong thing to do," Sanders said at a press conference.
According to her, the US increase in tariffs is related to "national security interests", while Ankara's move is "retaliation". "We do not support Türkiye's decision to retaliate against us," - the US president's spokesman said.
Last Friday, US President Donald Trump said he approved increasing tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel — up to 20% and 50%, respectively. The move caused the Turkish lira to collapse to a historic low. The White House reported that the move was unrelated to “trade or other issues.”
Türkiye, responding to US sanctions, has significantly increased tariffs on a number of US goods, in line with a decree by President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday.
