"Today, Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies on Earth... We know it is in America's interest to build partnerships in a region that is thriving, prosperous, and independent of anyone... We seek strong neighbors, not weak neighbors. Above all, we seek friendship," the White House quoted part of US President Donald Trump's speech in Da Nang, Vietnam, in a statement released on November 12.
According to the announcement, President Trump's state visit to Vietnam "reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership."
The statement also listed a number of other outcomes of the visit. President Trump "reinforced the international community's resolve to address the security challenges posed by North Korea."
The White House chief promoted a free and open Indo-Pacific region, in which the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership is an important element. Vietnam and the US issued a joint statement, sending a clear message to the region that the two countries are expanding cooperation and coordination.
The US reached an agreement to purchase land in Hanoi to build a new embassy, a prominent example of the development of bilateral relations, completing the three-year US-Vietnam Defense Cooperation Action Plan. The US also officially transferred a Hamilton-class coastal patrol ship to the Vietnamese navy. A US aircraft carrier is expected to visit Vietnam in 2018.
The two leaders congratulated the completion of the joint dioxin remediation project in Da Nang and welcomed the United States’ commitment to continue contributing to the remediation of Bien Hoa Airport. The two countries reaffirmed the importance of freedom of navigation, overflight, and unimpeded commerce in the South China Sea and their commitment to resolving maritime disputes on a legal basis.
President Trump also promotes American prosperity and trade, including new energy investments and purchases that create more jobs for Americans, according to the announcement.
President Trump arrived in Vietnam on November 10. He attended the APEC Summit in Da Nang, then went to Hanoi for a state visit to Vietnam on November 11 and 12. Vietnam is the fourth stop on Mr. Trump's Asian tour. He left Vietnam on the afternoon of November 12 for the Philippines to attend several ASEAN events and the East Asia Summit before returning to the United States.
