* Meritorious Artist - Lieutenant Colonel Bich Ngoc (Art Troupe of Military Region 4): Without the teacher, there would be no Meritorious Artist Bich Ngoc today.

I remember this day 1 year ago. Ms. Thanh Xuan, my former homeroom teacher, called to tell me: Ngoc, Mr. Thuyen has passed away! After that, both teacher and student just sobbed on the phone.

In my memory, teacher - musician An Thuyen was always gentle, caring and loved his students very much, teaching them like his own children. During the days when I - a teacher and student from the countryside - studied at the Military College of Culture and Arts (now the Military University of Culture and Arts).

Every afternoon, the teacher called the children to sit on the stone bench and pulled out their hair and gave them advice on the smallest things in life: how to behave, how to speak, how to live with love and affection, and how to be attached to their homeland and country. The teacher said that his childhood was also difficult in the fields, on the back of a buffalo, he practiced composing his first melodies with a bamboo flute, at that time, who taught him? From folk songs, lullabies, Vi and Giam melodies... to have the teacher today, the children also had to endure hardship and hard work.

However, in work and performance, the teacher was very strict with his students: He repeatedly reminded and required us to always maintain and practice the demeanor and qualities of a soldier. He said, this is a military school, and you are also soldiers.

More than 20 years have passed. The class of 18 people back then now has 6 Meritorious Artists… If it weren’t for him, there would never be Meritorious Artist Bich Ngoc today!

* Singer Nguyen Dinh Thanh Tam (Ho Chi Minh City):I want to say thank you to the teacher

When Tam participated in the Sao Mai Diem Hen program, he was lucky enough to sing his teacher's new song. At that time, the teacher and student only communicated over the phone, and it was only later that Tam had the chance to meet and talk with him in person.

After the Sao Mai Diem Hen program, when I had just graduated from the Architecture School, the teacher urged Tam to make an album to introduce to the audience. Tam told the teacher: "I really want to, but I don't have any money, teacher." But a few days later, the teacher called Tam to meet. At that time, Tam only thought the teacher called to discuss the lesson, but unexpectedly, the teacher gave Tam an envelope of 10 million VND and said that when he had money, he would give more. Tam was really surprised and touched by the teacher's affection for a young person like Tam. The CD "Canh Dieu Lac Pho" was later nominated for the 2012 Dedication Award, Tam wanted to express her gratitude to the teacher.

In the family, Tam rarely talked to anyone, but Tam could talk to the teacher about all kinds of things. Several times, the two of them went to the highlands together to perform, those were beautiful memories. The teacher was very simple, always respectful and made young people like Tam feel confident. The teacher helped Tam understand that to contribute art, one must come from the heart.

Up to now, Tam has been able to take care of himself for new projects, but the person who guided him in his first steps, his Teacher, he will always be grateful. From the bottom of his heart, Tam knows that his Teacher is still watching and supporting him, Tam will be serious and devoted to his profession, as his teacher taught him when he was alive.

* Meritorious Artist Van Khanh (Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music): Uncle An Thuyen lives forever...

The first time I met Uncle An Thuyen was exactly 20 years ago, in a student singing contest. Khanh sang Uncle An Thuyen's song "Hue Thuong". That was also the song Khanh loved when he sang. Besides "Hue Thuong", there were also Uncle An Thuyen's "Ca dao em va toi", "Chieu song Thuong", "Neo dau wharf que"... which were songs Khanh performed many times.

Khanh received enthusiastic comments from his uncle on every song. When he was in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and many other places, he invited Khanh to participate in many of his uncle's programs or his school's. That was something very precious to Khanh, and Khanh thought it was because the two of them had a connection, a connection between the children of the Central region, who loved their homeland with all their hearts.

Khanh respected and loved Uncle An Thuyen and his family as if they were his own flesh and blood. Every time he went to Hanoi, Khanh visited his aunt and uncle, played with Bong Mai, and became as close as family. Therefore, to Khanh, musician An Thuyen will always be there.

* Singer Huyen Trang (Army Song and Dance Theater): Remembering the head smack from teacher An Thuyen

I was fortunate to be considered by musician An Thuyen as one of his “favorite” students. My path to music always bears the mark of that talented teacher.

After my teacher passed away, I was assigned by musician Le An Tuyen and musician Quoc Nam to perform a new song called “Anh Mai La Vang Trang”. The song was written to commemorate my teacher. I sang it with all my love and respect for my teacher. Until now, I still get choked up every time I sing that song.

I was advised by the late musician An Thuyen from start to finish when I participated in the Sao Mai 2013 competition. When I registered to participate in those first days, I was busy looking for a song to compete in. At that moment, musician An Thuyen "knocked" me on the head and said, "You just take what is old, the original, and make it into something new." And the advisor chose the song "Buong ao em ra". That first "knock" will never fade away in my mind. At the Sao Mai competition that year, I was lucky to win first prize in the folk music category.

The memorial night for musician An Thuyen will take place on the night of June 25, 2016 in Vinh city (Nghe An). Although I will not be participating in this music night, my heart will always be with my teacher - with my hometown Nghe An.
