Japan introduces new bullet train with speed of 300 km/h
New improvements help the Shinkansen N700S train reduce running noise, consume less energy and be more comfortable.
"The N700S has been completely redesigned through improvements to key equipment. We have created a train that can become a symbol of the new era of the Tokaido Shinkansen," said Masayuki Ueno, deputy general manager of the high-speed rail system operation department at Central Japan Railway.
In addition to the new Supreme logo, the N700S also boasts a number of technical advances. Compared to the N700A model that entered service in 2013, the N700S has several advantages. The sharper nose design helps the new train reduce noise when entering tunnels and has less air resistance. The 16-car model is up to 11 tons lighter than the previous generation, thanks in part to new silicon carbide semiconductor materials and a natural air cooling system. As a result, the new train also consumes less energy.

The latest technology applied to the N700S will shorten the reaction time of the braking system. The underbody equipment has also been redesigned to be more efficient, allowing the train to be flexibly adjusted. For example, the usual 16-car train can be reduced to 8-12 cars. Experts hope that this flexibility will make the new train model more attractive to potential buyers at home and abroad.
The N700S is no faster than the previous generation, with a top speed of 300 km/h. The train's interior has been updated. All passenger seats will be equipped with power outlets for electronic devices. Reclining the seats will also be easier. First-class passengers will enjoy 15% more legroom. In addition, the overhead compartment can light up when the train approaches the station to remind passengers to collect their luggage.
