Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government was making every effort to rescue: "We are working hard to assess the extent of the damage and rescue those trapped in the earthquake. In addition, I have also ordered the authorities to provide information to the people as soon as possible."

Earlier, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the country's rescue agency had received hundreds of phone calls reporting collapsed houses and trapped victims, mostly from Mashiki town, where the shaking was the strongest./.
