The project to build Long Thanh International Airport was approved by the National Assembly in June 2015. This is a particularly important national project with an expected capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year, divided into 3 phases. Phase 1 must be completed and put into operation by 2025 at the latest with a runway, a passenger terminal and synchronous auxiliary items with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.

The total investment for the entire project is 336,630 billion VND (equivalent to 16.03 billion USD, according to 2014 unit prices), of which phase one is 114,450 billion VND (equivalent to 5.45 billion USD, excluding site clearance costs).

In mid-June, the National Assembly passed a Resolution on separating compensation, support, and resettlement into component projects to implement Long Thanh international airport.

On the afternoon of November 24, the National Assembly voted to pass a Resolution on the feasibility study report of the project of land acquisition, compensation, support and resettlement of Long Thanh International Airport, with 94.3% of delegates in favor; the total investment of the project is 22,938 billion VND.
