With winds reaching 180 km/h, Typhoon Phanfone disrupted over 600 flights and claimed four lives. Among the fatalities were three American soldiers who were swept away by waves while taking photographs on the southern island of Okinawa. A 21-year-old surfer also went missing off the coast of Fujisawa, southwest of Tokyo. Across the country, the typhoon also injured nine other people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special warning for risks of landslides, flooding, high waves, and heavy rain in central and western Japan. According to NHK television, local authorities also advised more than 300,000 people in high-risk areas to evacuate to safer locations.
