The Japanese Foreign Ministry's statement asserted that South Korea's military exercises in the area were "unacceptable" and demanded that South Korea immediately cancel the planned exercises. The statement also indicated that the Japanese government had sent a formal protest to the South Korean government against the exercises.
Previously, the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced that the military would conduct a joint exercise with the Coast Guard near the Dokdo Islands in mid-August to "enhance defense capabilities against the intrusion of foreign vessels." The exercise will involve approximately 10 warships and various types of modern South Korean fighter jets.
