(Baonghean.vn) - Two nuclear reactors at the Takahama power plant on the Sea of Japan coast may be the first reactors to be allowed to operate in 40 years, meeting new regulations set by the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Agency following the 2011 accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

In principle, the operating life of reactors across Japan is limited to 40 years. Reactors 40 years or older, if they want to be allowed to extend their operating life, need to meet the evaluation standards of the Nuclear Regulation Agency and other conditions.

On April 20, the Nuclear Regulation Authority officially decided through inspection documents that the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors at the Takahama power plant in Fukui Prefecture met these regulations. The two reactors are currently shut down.

Japanese public opinion is paying close attention to whether these two reactors can meet the remaining conditions and be approved to extend their operating life before July 7.

Remaining conditions include factory damage inspections and detailed earthquake resistance assessment of plans.

The plant's operator, Kansai Electric Power, said it would take more than three years to bring the reactors back into operation due to the need for safety enhancements.
