Japan is confident about the future of regenerative medicine.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced on February 22nd that the Japanese regenerative medicine market is projected to reach a total value of 1.6 trillion yen by 2030, up from its current modest size of 26 billion yen in 2012.

According to METI, Japan's regenerative medicine market in 2030 will develop with specialized products derived from human cells in a wide variety of types, and especially products from artificial pluripotent cells that could be commercialized in the future.

METI hopes that this assessment will encourage investment in this promising sector.

The field of regenerative medicine has attracted attention in Japan since Kyoto University professor Shinya Yamanaka won the Nobel Prize in Medicine last year for his groundbreaking research on artificial pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), from which any type of human cell can be produced.

METI's assessment comes after the ministry took into account the number of potential patients in Japan along with the average per capita cost of treatment. Globally, METI forecasts the regenerative medicine market will grow to 17 trillion yen by 2030, far exceeding 340 billion yen in 2012.

METI also stated that the cost of experimental treatments using regenerative medicine products could be reduced by up to 60%, and by up to 20%, if Japan implements proactive measures such as reforming regulations to facilitate faster approval of regenerative medicine products in clinical trials by relevant agencies and authorities—a process that currently takes up to seven years.

Regenerative medicine is the process of replacing or regenerating human cells, tissues, and organs to restore or re-establish their normal function. This field holds promise for regenerating tissues and organs in the body by replacing damaged tissues or stimulating the body's self-repair mechanisms to heal tissues and organs that have previously lost their ability to repair themselves.

Regenerative medicine also allows scientists to cultivate tissues and organs in the laboratory and safely transplant them when the body cannot repair itself. Particularly important is its ability to address the shortage of donated organs when the number of patients needing transplants is insufficient. Furthermore, regenerative medicine completely eliminates the risk of rejection after transplantation if the organ cells are taken from the patient's own tissues or cells.
