Akira Matsui, director of NCCHD Hospital, said: “We have safely performed regenerative medicine therapy using embryonic cells or iPS stem cells.”
For this rare case, the center used some of the liver cells that were left over from 14 transplant surgeries performed in and after May 2011.
The baby boy, who had impaired liver function, underwent a liver transplant on August 10th when he was 11 days old, and again two days later, on August 13th. After his condition stabilized, the baby boy is expected to be discharged from the hospital in just over a month.
