AFP reported that the Japanese Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo on January 8 to "strongly protest" the appearance of Chinese government ships in the waters around the disputed Senkaku Islands (called Diaoyu by Beijing) in the East China Sea.

This is the first time under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's administration that Tokyo has summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest over the incident.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said it has asked China to stop sending ships to the area around the island chain controlled by Tokyo.

On December 24, 2012, a Chinese aircraft and four warships were spotted near the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. This incident followed a series of similar actions that occurred on December 22.
