According to the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper on January 1st, Japan's Nuclear Safety Authority has discovered defects in the fire suppression systems of approximately 10 nuclear reactors, a move that could delay the restart of nuclear reactors in the country for several more years.

Citing sources from the Nuclear Safety Agency and the Japanese Ministry of Industry, the newspaper reported that the reactors were equipped with flammable cables or devices arranged too densely, facilitating the spread of fire.

Troubleshooting at Fukushima nuclear power plant

The Department of Industry is investigating the matter, and the Nuclear Safety Authority will question the power companies that operate these reactors.

For some reactors, reconditioning work can delay commissioning for years. And if those operations are too expensive, these nuclear reactors may not be restarted and will be decommissioned.

Nearly two years after the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, located 220km northeast of Tokyo, 48 out of 50 nuclear reactors in Japan have been shut down under new safety regulations.

The nuclear safety agency will have to publish the safety rating of nuclear power plants after studying new data on earthquake risk in relevant regions.
