Many car models have been discounted by hundreds of millions, but Vietnamese people are still indifferent.

Many car models are discounted, with incentives ranging from tens to hundreds of millions for buyers, but sales are still not promising.

Never before has the Vietnamese auto market witnessed such fierce price competition as it does now. Most car companies are applying promotions and discounts month after month, hoping to increase sales. However, not all discounts will attract buyers. Many car models, despite big promotions, are still struggling to sell.

In July, Nissan X-Trail sold a total of 110 cars, less than half of Honda CR-V and 500 cars less than Mazda CX-5. Notably, this is a segment that has been very competitive in terms of selling price in recent times.

Despite persistent price reductions, X-Trail still has not caught up with the sales of competitors in the segment.

Nissan's 5+2-seat crossover model offers cash prizes to car buyers ranging from 20 to 40 million VND, along with other gifts. However, when the X-Trail is discounted, its competitors are not sitting still. The Honda CR-V is even more discounted, from 100 to 170 million VND. The Mazda CX-5 is also not out of the race, with a price reduction of 30 million VND for all versions.

Another name in the 1 billion VND price range, Isuzu mu-X, also had poor sales in July. This car line sold a total of 21 units, despite applying a gift policy worth approximately 45 million VND.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport also received a discount policy of about 100 million VND in July, but sales reached 21 cars.

Honda Accord discounted by hundreds of millions of dong but still not popular.

In the sedan segment of about 1 billion VND, Honda Accord has a reduction of up to 100 million VND, however, sales of this car line in July only reached 17 cars. Compared to the same period last year, the number of cars sold was only half, while the price has decreased by nearly 200 million.

At a higher price point, the situation is similar. The Honda Odyssey, priced at nearly VND2 billion, was discounted by VND200 million in July, but not many people bought it. Sales of this model reached only 11 units, down 19 units compared to July last year. Since the beginning of the year, this is also Honda's worst-selling model, with sales of 63 units.

Launched in the Vietnamese market for nearly a year, Ciaz has not yet won the hearts of consumers, despite recent price reduction policies.

In the price range of 700 million VND or less, the situation is not optimistic for many car models despite applying deep discount policies. The Suzuki Ciaz sedan, listed at 580 million VND, received a discount of 40 million VND, but only sold 2 cars. This is the worst selling car model on the market in July. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Aveo LTZ, listed at 495 million VND, reduced by 30 million VND, only sold 26 cars, 8 cars less than in July last year.

It can be seen that the closer the time when ASEAN car import tax will be reduced to 0% in 2018, the more consumers hesitate and wait for car prices to decrease even more despite the fact that companies are applying as many incentive programs as possible.

When the market is stable, consumers are willing to buy cars even if they have to spend a lot of money, but in the current unpredictable market context, buying a car last month and losing hundreds of millions of dong next month, no one wants to take the risk, unless they really need it.

Statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association show that total market sales in July decreased by 16% compared to June and 27% compared to the same period last year, even though car prices are now cheaper./.
