Many victims fall into the lottery scam
Thanh introduced himself as a call center employee and informed Ms. L. that she had won a prize of 75 million VND and a Honda Vision motorbike. Because she was gullible, Ms. L. did as Thanh asked to receive the prize.
Lien Chieu District Police (Da Nang) said that they have issued a decision to prosecute the case and issued a 3-month temporary detention order for Do Duy Thanh (34 years old, residing in Dai Hong Commune, Dai Loc District, Quang Nam) for fraud and property appropriation.
Thanh confessed that in July 2016, he accidentally watched a video on Youtube.com introducing how to carry out fraud by calling to announce winning prizes.
In October 2016, Thanh tried a few times by randomly calling a mobile phone number and pretending to be an employee of switchboard A, announcing that the listener had won a prize from this switchboard, and one person was tricked into having their property taken away by Thanh.
In June 2017, Thanh worked at a pub on Ly Thai Tong Street (Hoa Minh Ward, Da Nang) and bought a mobile phone number starting with 08 to randomly call the mobile phone number owned by Ms. Tran Thi L. (52 years old, residing in Can Tho City).
Thanh introduced himself as a call center employee in Ho Chi Minh City, and informed Ms. L. that she had won a prize of 75 million VND and a Honda Vision motorbike. Because she was gullible, Ms. L. followed Thanh's request to receive the prize. Accordingly, Ms. L. submitted phone cards to Thanh many times, with card values ranging from 100,000 VND to 1 million VND.
After a while, no unit came to give the prize, knowing she had been scammed, Ms. L. filed a complaint with the police. Through investigation, Lien Chieu District Police have clarified that Thanh was the scammer. The case is under further investigation./.
