Many US lawmakers want to punish Putin 'more strongly'
Speaking during a visit to the Baltic states, Ukraine and Georgia, John McCain and many US senators declared that Washington will support these countries, while calling for heavier sanctions against Russia.
On the first day of 2017, Republican Senator John McCain reiterated his call for the US to impose stronger sanctions on Russia, saying that Washington could only improve relations with Moscow by taking a tough stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the British newspaper The Guardian reported.

McCain asserted that the US and allied countries need to take measures to counter Russia's moves.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters while visiting Georgia, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham affirmed that now is the time for the US to impose new sanctions not only targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin personally but also Russia's energy and banking sectors.
The above statements were made following the opinions of many US congressmen, from both the Republican and Democratic parties, wanting to conduct a special investigation related to cyber attacks on the US by some countries, especially Russia, during the 2016 presidential election.
So far, Russia has always denied this cyber attack accusation.
