These days, people in many localities in the province are going to the forest to hunt for yellow bee nests. The price of buying shell bee nests from 1.6 - 1.8 million VND/kg is quite attractive to people in the mountains.

At this time, many mountain people in the province are going to the forest to hunt for yellow bee nests (also known as yellow bees, white bees) to import to purchasing facilities. The places to hunt for yellow bee nests are bare hills, low hills, with many bushes. People who go bee hunting often bring water, milk, rice, gloves, specialized clothes... Photo: Huy Thu

The yellow bee builds its nests low, mainly hanging under the branches of acacia trees and shrubs such as sim, mua, and vat. Moreover, this species of bee is not too aggressive, so it is quite easy to take the nest. Because the number of bee hunters is increasing, the bee nests are being exploited heavily, so from mid-season onwards, hunting for bee nests will be more difficult. Photo: Huy Thu

Hunting for bees during hot summer days is quite hard. Bee hunters have to search all over bare hills, sometimes crossing passes, streams, and walking dozens of kilometers to find beehives. During the beehive fever season, in addition to the professional bee hunting team, people who go to the forest, cut trees, and weed tea... are also actively searching for beehives to earn extra income. A man in Hanh Lam commune (a commune formed by merging Thanh Duc commune and Hanh Lam commune of the old Thanh Chuong district) brought a beehive to sell and said: It is the beginning of the beehive season, the beehives are still small and few. On average, each day going up the forest, people can earn about 2-3 kg of beehive per person. Immediately after coming down the mountain, people bring the beehive to local purchasing facilities to sell. Photo: Huy Thu

Depending on the size, pupa or shell, the honeycomb is purchased at different prices. Honeycomb with pupa is being purchased at some purchasing points in Hanh Lam commune for 350,000 - 400,000 VND/kg, shell is purchased for 1,600,000 - 1,800,000 VND/kg. Photo: Huy Thu

Ms. Hoang Thi Tham, owner of a beehive purchasing facility in Hanh Lam commune, said: After purchasing, the beehives are peeled off the pupae and shell to be sold separately. Every day, her family has to hire 7-10 workers in the village to peel off the bee pupae. Photo: Huy Thu

Honeycomb purchasing facilities usually pay workers who peel bee pupae based on time or product volume, with 30,000 VND paid for every 1 kg of pupae peeled. A hard worker can only peel 3-4 kg of pupae in a session, earning about 100,000 - 120,000 VND. Photo: Huy Thu

After the bee pupae are shelled, the facilities will classify, box them, consume them immediately or freeze them for storage. In addition to serving the needs of local people, bee pupae are sold to restaurants, pubs, and sent to the provinces. The retail price of yellow bee pupae in the locality is around 350,000 VND/kg, about 100,000 VND higher than last year. The shelled honeycombs are collected by the facilities and sent to traders to take to the border provinces. Photo: Huy Thu

Currently, the mountain people who hunt for golden beehives import all the honeycombs they can find. Hunting, selling honeycombs, and removing bee pupae have brought income to many mountain people. In the hot season, when hunting for honeycombs in the forest, people need to be careful to avoid heatstroke and accidents, and also be careful to prevent fires and forest fires. Photo: Huy Thu
