Many shares come to the single mother 'walking on her hands'
(Baonghean.vn) - Vieng Thi Tham's life is a long series of misfortunes and sufferings: orphaned at an early age, disabled, and betrayed by her lover. But she still has two great fortunes: a healthy son and good friends who are kind and tolerant.
Long chain of misfortune
In Phong village, Thach Giam commune (Tuong Duong), there is a family with very special circumstances: The mother is disabled ("walks" with both legs and arms), single-handedly raising her 10-year-old son. The mother's name is Vieng Thi Tham (born in 1982); the son has his mother's surname, Vieng Quoc Thang.

Tham is the third child in a family of four siblings. Her father is a Tay Poong (a group of the Tho ethnic group) from Phong village, Tam Hop border commune; her mother is a Thai from Phong village, Thach Giam commune. When she was born, Tham was healthy and normal. At the age of 11, after a serious illness, her limbs suddenly became cramped, and she was permanently disabled.
Misfortune continued to befall Vieng Thi Tham's life when her parents passed away one after another due to illness. Tham lived with her two older brothers, and life, which was already difficult and deprived, became even more precarious and difficult. Her two older brothers had their own families, then fell ill and passed away one after another, leaving a void that could not be filled.

Vieng Thi Tham's joy is that her son Vieng Quoc Thang is healthy and obedient. |
Living alone in a dilapidated house with a disabled body, Vieng Thi Tham survived those days thanks to the neighbors who gave her cassava roots one day and rice balls the next to help her cope with hunger. Feeling sorry for her disabled and orphaned grandchild, her maternal relatives decided to take Tham back to her hometown in Phong village, building a small makeshift house precariously located on the side of a mountain to live.
A man from the same village came to learn about and plan to build a home for her. At times, the disabled girl's heart was filled with hope and thoughts of a happy home. But the boy's parents refused to allow the wedding. They did not give a clear reason, but everyone knew that they did not accept a disabled daughter-in-law.
Her lover disappeared, Tham became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy named Vieng Quoc Thang. The life of mother and son was full of hardships and deprivation. The allowance for the disabled was not enough to cover daily expenses. She had to crawl into the forest to collect firewood to sell, and stay up all night to embroider dresses for hire to earn money to raise her child.

Even though she has to "walk" by hand, Vieng Thi Tham still tries to do everything she can to make a living for her and her child. |
This year Thang is 10 years old, studying in the 4th grade of the village school. Aware of his difficult circumstances, from a young age he has listened to his mother, been obedient and hard-working, always finding ways to help his mother. Seeing his son grow up day by day, his mother's worries seem to lessen...
Warm love life
According to Vieng Thi Tham, she and her child are where they are today thanks to the sharing and help of good friends, especially a friend who is working at the district Radio and Television Station. Being a close friend since first grade, witnessing Tham's misfortune, that friend introduced her to organizations, agencies and kind-hearted individuals who cared and accepted help.

Faced with Tham's situation, few people refused, some more, some less, all contributed to share. There were friends from far away, from Vinh City, Hanoi, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, who also sent money or supplies to help.
Vieng Thi Tham’s close friend “connected” and established the “Association of Mothers Helping Mother and Child”. Recently, the mothers donated money to buy Vieng Quoc Thang a new bicycle to go to school, and bought books and clothes for him to start the school year.
