Many pig carcasses weighing 80 - 100 kg were thrown directly into the Day River, floating along the water.

Recently, there have been many cases of dead pigs of unknown origin floating on rivers in Hanoi.

On the afternoon of May 15, on the Day River, passing through Van Dinh town (Ung Hoa district), there were 3 dead pigs, each weighing 80-100 kg, in the process of decomposition. Next to them, there were several sacks containing dead animals, covered with flies and giving off a foul smell.

Mr. Tran Quang Hai, Chairman of Van Dinh town, said that although the locality has not had any outbreaks of African swine fever, the government had to hire people twice last week to collect pig carcasses and destroy them. This section of the river is the intersection of the Van Dinh and Day rivers, so waste from upstream often accumulates.

"The dead pigs may have been thrown down by some farmers in Ha Dong and Thanh Oai areas, and carried along the river. The town has to spend 2.5 million VND each time it collects the dead pigs, sprays disinfectant and buries them. However, every few days, dead pigs appear on the river again," said Mr. Hai.

In the Day River area, at the intersection between Huong Son Commune (My Duc, Hanoi) and Tan Son Commune (Kim Bang, Ha Nam), there were also two dead pigs weighing more than 100 kg floating on the water. The point where the dead pigs were discovered was only about 200 m from the Huong Son Commune quarantine checkpoint located on Provincial Road 978.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Chairman of Huong Son Commune, said that the locality recently discovered an outbreak of African swine fever, so the authorities have set up many 24/7 animal quarantine checkpoints on the roads leading to the commune.

"When there are dead pigs in the river, we will mobilize staff to destroy them immediately," said Mr. Tuan Anh.

In My Hung commune, Thanh Oai district, about 40 meters from the southern axis of Hanoi, there is a burial ground for pigs infected with African swine fever. People passing by have to cover their noses because of the smell of dead pigs. The burial ground is filled with black foam, on the surface of the ground is a dead pig weighing about 90 kg lying around, decomposing vigorously.

Mr. Chu Phu My, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, confirmed that recently, the city's veterinary agency discovered dead pigs floating in the river.

"The above phenomenon is caused by some small-scale pig farmers dumping pigs. These pigs may have other diseases, not African swine fever. The city supports the destruction of pig farmers with pigs infected with African swine fever very quickly, so the possibility of pigs being dumped indiscriminately is low," Mr. My commented.

Mr. My said that Hanoi has issued a document requesting districts to strictly manage the source of African swine fever, not allowing dead pigs to be thrown into ditches, rivers, and lakes. When discovered, local authorities must immediately destroy and disinfect them.

According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, African swine fever has occurred in 7,760 households (accounting for 9.2% of the total number of households and livestock facilities) in 1,206 villages and residential groups of 346 communes in 24 districts of the city. Hanoi has destroyed more than 120,000 pigs weighing over 8,000 tons.
