BRIDGE OF COMPASSION: A poor worker's family and a tragic event.
Life was already difficult in their simple tiled house, but it became even harder when Mr. Pham Duc Hoan suffered a stroke, leaving worries and burdens for the whole family.

Those agonizing months in the hospital
For over a month, Ms. Luu Thi Nga, from Quang Thai hamlet, Thien Nhan commune, Nghe An province, has been desperately trying to save her husband's life by visiting hospitals of all levels, from central to local. To ensure her husband, Pham Duc Hoan, could recover as he has today, she has had to borrow money from relatives and neighbors, both large and small amounts, with the unwavering belief that "as long as there is life, there is hope."
A stroke struck, and from being the main breadwinner of the family, Mr. Hoan suffered brain death, leaving him paralyzed on one side of his body. His impoverished family was plunged into tears and anxiety.

The house was devoid of laughter.
We visited the small house by the Lam River, where Hoan and Nga's family lives. Only Hoan and his grandmother remain. Hoan's mother, Nguyen Thi Hoa, choked back tears as she recounted, "My son and his wife worked as laborers in the South, but they weren't well-off, so they returned to our hometown. Their grandparents are always ill and can't help much, only giving us a small plot of land in the garden to build a tiled house. Hoan's father is also hospitalized due to complications from diabetes and kidney disease."
Mr. Hoan and Mrs. Nga have two children. Their eldest son joined the military after graduating from high school. Their second daughter, Pham Kim Ly, is in 12th grade this year. With her small stature, Ly's health isn't as good as her peers. Since her father fell ill, Ly has done everything she can outside of school to earn extra money to help her family. Every day, Ly knits cute woolen animals, selling them for 50-70 thousand dong, and then asks relatives to take the money to her mother's hospital.

The tragedy has made life more difficult than ever for Hoan and Nga's family. In the impoverished Quang Thai neighborhood, Nga's family, like the other residents, hopes for a miracle to happen to Hoan. In their time of hardship, Nga's family hopes to receive support from the community to overcome their current predicament.
