Peony grapes cost more than a million dong per kilogram.
Considered a "superfood", Japanese grapes imported into the Vietnamese market and sold at high prices are still popular with many customers.
Ms. Hang (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) said that her family really likes grapes, so whenever there is a new, unique product, she buys it to enjoy. Previously, American finger grapes were quite popular, but recently many stores have started to introduce Japanese grapes.
“At the beginning of the season, this type of hand-carried grape was priced at 3 million VND per kilogram, but now it has cooled down. Some places sell it for 900,000 VND, while others sell it for 1.2-1.4 million VND per kilogram. I don’t care about the price, I order any product that is of good quality and has juicy fruit,” said Ms. Hang.

Also often buying new products, Ms. Lanh in District 7 said that she was introduced by friends to buy and try even though the price is quite high. However, this product is limited in quantity so it usually has to be ordered in advance. According to the seller, this grape variety is called Shine Muscat from Japan, also known as peony grapes. The taste of the fruit is delicious, not astringent. Each bunch weighs about 500-800 grams.
The owner of an imported fruit store on Truong Dinh Street (District 1) also said that recently she saw people carrying a lot of Japanese green grapes, so she also bought some to try selling and they sold quite well.
“If American and Chilean grapes cost only 200,000-400,000 VND per kilogram, Japanese grapes are three times more expensive, from 850,000 to 900,000 VND per kilogram because all the goods are sold. This is also the cheapest price currently,” said the staff here.
Also specializing in imported goods, the manager at a fruit store on Le Thi Rieng Street (District 1) said that every two days he imports about 20-30kg of grapes, but they always sell out early because of the large number of customers.
“At the beginning of the season, the price of a bunch of grapes weighing about 500 grams was up to 1.5 million VND, but now at the end of the season it has dropped by half,” said an employee of this store, adding that a large bunch of peony grapes (800 grams - 1 kg) costs 1.45 million VND per kg, while a small bunch costs 680,000 VND per bunch.

“This is a 'superfood'. I only started selling it for a trial in early October, but every batch that comes in is sold out. Many places sell it at sky-high prices, but I only sell it for 900,000 VND per kilo for the small bunches, and 1.2 million VND per kilo for the large bunches,” Ms. Anh in Hanoi pledged.Peony grapes are a high-class variety, with large, crispy, sweet fruit and a strong aroma. If you taste closely, it has a faint scent similar to that of ripe mango.
Currently, Japan is one of the countries with many expensive grape varieties. Specifically, in early July, at the Kurashi Kaientai supermarket in Hyogo prefecture, Kansai region (Japan), a bunch of 30 Ruby Roman grapes displayed here was expected to be purchased for about 366 USD, or more than 8 million VND. In Japan, Ruby Roman grapes are a precious product. The first grapes are considered to bring prestige and luck, so they are often brought to auction and sold at sky-high prices.
Shine Muscat grapes are also quite famous, their season lasts from June to November. On Japanese online markets, during the discount period, the product is sold at 600,000-900,000 VND per kg, and at peak times, it is over 3 million VND per kg.
