Woody grapes originated in South Africa and were introduced to our country and are mainly grown in Da Lat (Lam Dong) for the past 2 years.

This strange plant is found in South American countries such as Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

Identification characteristics: woody grape has a large, sturdy trunk, the grape bark is similar to the guava tree, the leaves are larger than guava leaves, shaped quite similar to tea leaves, the white flowers are quite similar to tea flowers and guava flowers. The average plant takes 6-10 years to produce fruit.

It is known that woody grapes have many uses, very good for health. The flavor of woody grapes is also very unique, sweet, cool, light, aromatic, rich, used to squeeze for juice, make smoothies, make dishes, salads... or used to make wine.

From the base to the top, everywhere you can see green and purple woody grapes growing all over the tree.

Owning 2 rare woody grapevines over 10 years old that are bearing fruit, Ms. Hoa happily said that her family imported these 2 grapevines from Brazil 6 years ago. When they were imported, the trees were as big as a wrist. After 3 years of care, the trees started to bear fruit and this year is the 2nd year that these woody grapevines have produced fruit.

Ms. Hoa said that when she learned that her two woody grapevines were bearing fruit, many people came to admire and enjoy them. According to Ms. Hoa, her woody grapevines have a sweet taste when ripe, mixed with a light sour taste. This type of grape is seedless and very easy to preserve.

Unlike other types of grapes whose fruit usually grows in clusters, woody grapes not only have tall, woody stems, but also have fruit that grows on this rough trunk.

Sharing about how to care for grapevines, this rare grape variety, Ms. Hoa said: “After 2 months of planting, grapes must be watered regularly twice a day and mainly fertilized with decomposed organic fertilizer. When the plant is healthy, you can add a little nitrogen and potassium. Woody grapes grow quite slowly, but are very healthy and have very few pests and diseases.”

Ms. Hoa added that this year each grapevine produces about 30 - 50kg/main crop, but the special thing is that if well cared for, woody grapes can produce fruit all year round. However, off-season grapes do not produce as much fruit and often ripen sporadically.

In Vietnam, the trend of growing woody grapevines originated in Da Lat. Here, some gardeners have successfully grown and propagated this type of tree.

“Currently, the price of woody grapes on the market fluctuates around 120,000 - 150,000 VND/kg, but due to limited quantity, they are very scarce. With these two trees, my family only has enough to eat, not to sell. There are also many shops selling seedlings, however, the price of seedlings depends on many factors, but the older the tree, the more expensive it is,” said Ms. Hoa.

Currently in Hanoi, many people are looking to buy both the fruit and the tree to enjoy and buy seeds to plant. Currently, in Hanoi, stalls selling woody grapes are very rare, due to limited quantity, and some stalls on Hoang Hoa Tham street are also selling this rare grape variety. Accordingly, the price ranges from 100,000 - 150,000 VND/tree about 10 - 15cm.
